Do you need a license in Washington to become a handyman?
Washington does not offer a handyman license. However, general contractors and specialty contractors are required to register with the state’s labor and industry board. Handyman professionals are referred to as specialty contractors who perform minor work on existing properties with a value less than $2,000.
Specialty contractors must register to perform one handyman trade or craft. Examples of trades/crafts include appliance installation, asbestos/lead management, window installations, and construction clean up. Here is a list of specialty contractor trades as defined by the Washington state legislature. To register as a specialty contractor, applicants must:
- Be at least 18 years old with a high school diploma or GED.
- Register their businesses with the Washington Secretary of State ($180).
- Apply for a business license ($19 – $24).
- Get an employer identification number from the IRS.
- Complete a contractor application.
- Purchase liability insurance (at least $250,000) and a surety bond ($6,000).
General contractors
in Washington state are authorized to perform work in a variety of trades/crafts, including (but not limited to) boiler/steam fitting, cabinetry, and closet installations. To register as a general contractor, applicants must:
- Be at least 18 years old with a high school diploma or GED.
- Register their businesses with the Washington Secretary of State ($180).
- Apply for a business license ($19 – $24).
- Get an employer identification number from the IRS.
- Complete a contractor application.
- Purchase liability insurance (at least $250,000) and a surety bond ($12,000).
The Washington State Department of Labor and Industries issues general contractor and specialty licenses. It is against Washington state law to perform handyman work without registering with the state’s department of labor office.
You should know that the registration does not include building and business permits. As a handyman professional working in Washington state, it is your responsibility to obtain the required permits to perform handyman services.
